Export the references you need from a library database. Typically, these exports will be in RIS format.

  • Once you have downloaded the RIS file, locate the downloaded file(s) and double-click to open it.
  • This should open the EndNote application on your computer.
  • The reference(s) should be in Imported References in the EndNote program.

If this doesn’t work, an alternate method is to manually import the references:

  • In Endnote, go to File > Import
  • Find the RIS file in your Downloads folder or wherever you saved the file.
  • Choose the file from the window that pops up.
  • Click the Import button in the lower right corner.
  • The reference(s) should be in Imported References in the EndNote program.

If these steps do not work:

  • Check to see if you have the most up-to-date version of EndNote 20.
  • If you don’t, you need to update to the latest version of EndNote 20 and restart your computer. See this Guide for downloading EndNote 20.
  • Then follow the steps above to add the reference to EndNote.

Your imported references should appear in the Last Imported folder. If your references still do not import correctly, get more help at Ask Us! or contact EndNote Support.
